Project overview:
Ames is a fabulous community to live, work, and play. The Ames Foundation supports the community with quality-of-life initiatives by enhancing vitality. We are excited to launch with our partners the Ames Murals: An Open Air Gallery to make our outdoor spaces more exciting, inviting, and energetic.
The Ames Foundation will connect artists and property owners to weave together a more vibrant community where residents and guests want to spend more time in our open air environment. Passionate artists can showcase their talents, and small businesses will create more attractive spaces that drive traffic to strengthen economic vitality.
Building Owner Responsibilities:
- Contribute $2,000 as upfront cost per mural. These monies will offset artist proposal expenses.
- Ensure building surface is repaired (if necessary), clean, and primed using a high-quality exterior latex.
Other Considerations:
- Unless otherwise agreed upon, federal law states that artists retain all copyright privileges of any work they create, meaning neither the committee nor the property owner may reproduce or profit off the mural image in any way. https://www.copyright.gov/engage/visual-artists/. You may work with the artist to get permission to reproduce the image for publicity purposes and for any commercial purposes, such as selling postcards or prints of the image.
- For up to two years after the mural completion, artists will be responsible for any touch-ups due to fading or flaking paint, unless caused by a building moisture issue, which is the responsibility of the building owner.
- Murals can last up to 5-7 years. Unless there are extenuating circumstances, building owners agree not to alter or remove the mural until after five to seven years.
